How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

It Starts With A Dream – How To Create A Vision Board

in Everyday on 08/21/18

Disclosure: This is a sponsored blog post in partnership with BIC. All opinions expressed are, as always, my own.

Dream. Believe. Do. Repeat.

My Hubby and I have a special New Year’s Eve tradition. Before the clock strikes midnight, we sit down in front of a roaring fire with pens and paper and create a dream list of goals for the new year. My favourite section of this list is always the part where we brainstorm our dream destinations. We choose the places, in a perfect world, that we would love to be able to visit in the new year. Destinations can include quick weekend getaways to the city, cottage escapes, or elaborate luxury family vacations far, far away. No idea is too big or too small. No idea is off limits. After all, it doesn’t hurt to dream. Now, as my girls are getting older, I’m encouraging them to dream big and am helping them reach their full potential with fun, creative and educational activities. This back-to-school season, I’m asking them to think about their academic goals, what they might want to accomplish in their future careers, what kind of special purchases they may want to save for, and of course, where in the world they might like to explore. I’ve passed on my love of travel to both my daughters and always encourage them to talk about, dream about, and create a plan to get to those places they are aching to explore.

I believe that pictures have power and if you dream it, you can achieve it! So, this summer, we created vision boards, because everything in life starts with a dream!

Follow these steps to create a vision board that will help fuel your family’s creativity.

What you’ll need:

A list of goals or one specific goal.

Tip: Reflect on where you’ve been and where you want to go. What is your biggest, wildest dream?

For this vision board, we’re focusing on dream destinations.

Supplies:

  • Bulletin Board or Bristol Board of any colour
  • Thumb Tacks or Glue
  • Scrapbook Paper
  • Pens  – we love the new BIC® Gel-ocity® Quick Dry gel pens that deliver super smooth writing and vibrant colours with ink that dries up to 3x faster*
  • Travel Pictures and m,agazines
  • Scissors
  • Optional: a gorgeous frame to display your final work

Once you’re organized, it’s time to get started! This is the fun part.  Dream big, have fun and get your craft on!

Step 1

Make a list of places you want to explore.  Do you have a list of dream destinations?  We do, and it’s constantly changing.  For this vision board, we choose to focus on a trip we are hoping to take through Europe.  It would see us tripping through the streets of Paris, eating pasta in Rome and trying out our best British accents in London.  Le Sigh, can you imagine?   Yes, you can!  That’s what this exercise is all about!

Step 2
Search through your magazines, books, your favourtie travel sites, old postcards and photos to find pictures for your vision board and cut them all out.

Step 3
Pick the size of board you’d like to work with (it can be any size!)  and arrange your pictures on your board in a way that is visually appealing to you.  Enjoy the process.

Step 4
Make it pretty! Break out your BIC® Gel-ocity®  Quick Dry pens and get creative.

Add in titles, city names, goals, inspirational travel quotes, words of empowerment and subtitles to complete your vision board.

The beautiful thing about a vision board is that there’s no right or wrong way to create it.  Just keep colouring, decorating, adding, and taking away pictures until you’re happy with the final result.

Once you’re satisfied, secure it all down with glue or thumbtacks and call it done! Feeling extra fancy? Consider laminating your final work of art or using a pretty wood frame to hang it somewhere you will see it every day. Now all that’s left to do is enjoy your creation.

Happy creating!

Have you ever made a vision board?

I need to create a board. Place I have been and place I want to see(that would be the biggest part of the board).

I love the idea of also putting on places that you’ve already been. And I’m already thinking of doing another vision board —more of like what you described – outlining everywhere I want to go. It’s going to have to be a very big board! 🙂

I’m a very visual person – and even though I blog and use my computer all day long – I find pen and paper – colouring and cutting to be an incredible way to explore my thoughts.

Oh yes it is! I wonder how much your vision board will have changed in the last 10 years? It will be fabulous to be able to compare them.
