How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

And Then I Crashed On The Floor

in Everyday on 02/02/15

I went upstairs desperate for sleep.  It had been a very long day, at the end of an extraordinarily long week.  Within moments, the blissful sleep I so needed began.

At 4am I awoke with a start.  Goosebumps running up and down my spine and a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach.  Something was wrong, very wrong.  I could hear one of my babies crying out for help, a weak sad, kitten like mewl from down the hall.   I ran, trying not to trip over the cat, to find one of my girls covered in sweat, mumbling, delirious, not making any sense.  Red blood shot eyes, ghostly pale skin, “I can’t lift my arms Mum, I was calling you, I’m so cold, Please Mum ….help me.”  A quick call out to my Husband and we began as quickly as we could to starting fighting what turned out to be an extremely aggressive fever.  That poor kid was registering a fever of 104, rocking back and forth, clutching her head in pain.  Ouf, my heart.

All through the night we tried every fever reducing technique we knew.

We got that temp down enough that my babe stopped shaking, started to make sense again.  Then, for the first time in more than 11 years, I slept on the floor, next to my “baby’s” bed.

A quick trip to the Doctor the next day just to confirm we weren’t dealing with some crazy ear infection or wild strep that needed antibiotics.  Diagnosis; a virus.  Yup, expectation of two days of wild fever and raging headaches, followed by a cough and chest cold.

ColdMeds

Reality check:  My baby is going to have a crummy couple of days.  I spent my Saturday night stocking up on some essentials at the drug store and now must Lysol all the things so the rest of us don’t catch this nasty bug!  I’m more thankful than ever for my healthy happy children, and just because my “little people” are now kinda grown up, in their teenager style bodies, this doesn’t mean they won’t forever be my babies.

Hope you all had a healthy happy weekend!

That must have been scary! It’s funny, though, even through my teens and twenties, I too called for my mom when I was sick. I’ll always be her baby too I guess.

Awww…I know what that is like too!! We will always be their mothers and when your girls start having babies, you will continue to be their caring doting mother and feel those same feelings. I don’t know Stephanie, it never goes away..hope you are ALL well 🙂

Is there a scary sound in the middle of the night? Goosebumps for sure! Hope your baby is feeling better now, nothing worse then when your little one’s are down and out.

Oh your poor “babe”! Sure hope she is feeling so much better today. Your story brought tears to my eyes as I remember back to when our children were at times, feverish babes themselves! As mommas we feel so helpless at times! Sounds as if you and your hubby handled the situation expertly!

104! My husband would have been hauling her off to the emegency room. I’ll admit that I would have been scared, too.

I’m glad you were able to get the fever down. Some people are against fever reducing meds, but used modestly, they are a big help and relief.

Oh no! That’s an awful feeling when your babies are so sick! I hope she’s on the mend soon.

Both my baby (5 years old) and I battled the same virus 2 weeks ago. My baby girl had her fever for 7 days unfortunately with little relief offered by any medication. Two weeks later she’s still coughing and battling the cold. UGH!!
Hope your ‘baby’ feels better soon!

Oh that is so scary. I am glad it is getting better. As a Mom that is the most helpless feeling in the world. Hope all is better soon and no one else gets it. Take care. Hug B
