How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

The Insomnia Queen

in Everyday on 10/29/09

Yah Yah. We all know about us Stay At Home Mom’s.

Sitting around all day in our Pj’s watching our “shows” and eating bon bons.

Not a care in the world. No worries, no complaints.

If this is true then what the hell is wrong with me??

My name is ModernMom and I am a SAHM, I am busy and I am a Worrier.

I make lists. My last list was not titled “To Do” of “Honey Do” (one of my favorites by the way). but was actually tittled.

“My I’m Freakin Out and Never Gonna Get It All Done List”

This SAHM is one of the busiest people ever!!

So when I lie in bed at night lately I just can’t seem to turn it off!

On top of the lists running through my head, are these random thoughts:

I wonder if my BlueEyes is right that the wee boy in her class who mames insects and glues them to paper is going to be in jail one day. (ummm can you say serial killer???)

I worry that I have not picked out the right dress for the upcoming charity event. (It’s a fine balance between she looks hot and she looks like she is trying too hard)

I can’t believe I had to turn down another dinner invite from the same couple. They are going to think I’m dodging them. (I am so not.)

I am sure this much chocolate can’t be good for you, and is not going to help me fit into said dress. (Must add buy more Halloween Candy to my Freakin List)

I worry about a girlfriend who is very ill and another who accepted a proposal from her Mr.Big. Sigh.
I wonder why the school my kids attend. A really good school, with an absenteeism rate of almost 25% right now, has not been shut down until our kids can be vaccinated against the swine flu.

I wonder if getting the H1N1 vaccine is even the right thing to do.

I can’t imagine why parents with ill children have to be TOLD to keep there kids at home.

I’m ticked off that I missed garbage day and when it only comes every 9 days or so, this is a big deal.

Another marriage. Another friend devastated. Another family has ended in divorce. This is 4 in just under a year! What is going on?

My head spins back around to a charity event I’m organizing. Ticket sales, seating, ordering wine, centrepieces, auction items……

Then when I look at the clock and realize it’s 3am an I have to get up in 4 hours! Oh you should never do the math!

Sleep comes but it is fitful and full of vivid nightmares.

Today I am whiny and will end up strung out on coffee and rambly. Like this post!

What is my point?

-If your kids are sick. Show respect and keep them home.

-Never underestimate what a SAHM has going on behind those closed doors.

End of Rant!

Wishing you all sweet dreams!

Your post sounds just like my post from yesterday! Random bits and rants! Too funny!

      Hope you get some sleep.

Oh, and we are all (five of us) getting the H1N1 shot next week. Absolutely.

Amen to this post!! My childless sister came over to my house one day and saw that I have TONS of tv shows on my DVR that go back weeks and weeks. She asked me why I hadn’t been watching my shows and I said “Because I don’t have time.” And she said, “But, you stay at home with your son all day. You could watch them then.” Someday she will have kids and see for herself exactly why I can’t watch my tv shows all day. Or ever.

And, my opinion about the swine flu shot: there is no way I would let my son or anyone in my family be given the swine flu shot. It is too new and it has some dangerous ingredients, like mercury and squalene.

I’m sure you will look beautiful at your event! Still enjoy your chocolate!

So true. But, we have a job that we can’t leave at work! I can’t turn it off either. I can always fall asleep easily at night, but if I get woken up, forget it. I’m up for hours thinking about things. H1N1 is topping my list lately, too.

I so agree with you… are people that inconsiderate or just really dumb? :-/

I am a SAHM with three furkids that are SO much work, and a big house and working on projects to bring in money – it was easier when I had a 9 to 5 job sometimes, I swear!

I was a SAHM the whole time my kids were growing up. It’s a very hard, very busy, very unappreciated, but worth every minute job! I work now but could still fill up every minute with things to do at home if I was a SAHG (grandma)
      Hang in there!

I just missed my garbage day today for the 2nd week in a row. I can’t even believe it!

You will look like a million bucks in your dress! No worries!

as a working mumm not a SAHM I can say there are days when I’ve done the “is she ill, isn’t she ill – she can go to school and they will send her home if she gets bad” and she’s gone back to school a day earlier than I would have sent her if I was a SAHM. sometimes it’s really really hard to keep all the balls in the air. yes my daughter comes first, yes I do care about her and all the other kids at school – but I also have to keep a pay check coming in. (but no, if I had swine flu, I would not send daughter in – that’s just dumb)

and as a WM not a SAHM, I also lie at night with the same things going round in my head.

      good luck with the dress!

I know what you mean. My husband calls me “the stay at home mom who is never home.” But the main thrust of your post reminds me of something my sister has posted on her Facebook page: “Be kinder than necessary for everyone is fighting their own private battle.” Thanks for putting out there what many of us are feeling!

I am an insomnia queen too. It is the only time to think when it is quiet. I am getting too old to survive on a few hours of sleep! I think too many people underestimate all we do as moms, whether we stay at home or work.

I can’t shut my brain off either – even if there is not much going on. You have a ton going on, so it’s no wonder it’s affecting your sleep. Wishing you some good rest soon!

I have my days. Some I spend constantly going and doing one errand or activity to the next NON-STOP until 11 pm – like yesterday. Then there are some when I facebook for hours on end (I don’t watch shows.) I think it all evens out somehow.

And I think my son is in your BlueEyes’ class. :/

This post rocks. I am a SAHM and I totally feel the same way. By the end of the day I am ready for everyone to go to sleep and then maybe I can. But no I hear something or I am like you going over things. Oh well we rock…

I’m totally there with you. We forgot to put the garbage out last week too. I can’t shut my mind down at night wither. I’m sure your charity event will go great and you’ll look hot.

That’s one of my pet peeves, too –parents who still send their kids to school when the children are not well.

      It’s now almost 2am and I’m still up…
