Devouring San Antonio: Exploring 8 Hot Stops On This Texas Food Scene

in Travel on 04/15/19

After you’ve fed your soul and doused your wanderlust exploring everywhere from the Alamo to the Riverwalk it’s time to dive into the food scene of San Antonio.  This charming city has quickly become a premier food and wine destination and as one of only two U.S. cities designated a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy San Antonio, they are proud and ready to welcome you with open arms.  Here are 8 Hot Spots in the city of San Antonio you don’t want to miss:

Where To Eat:

Burgerteca

After devouring a burger at Burgerteca, there is one thing I know for sure.  No other burger will ever measure up.  This casual, welcoming eatery is built around the ever popular hamburger but with a few remarkable twists.  Chef John Hernandez has created a welcoming and whimsical space that offers the traditional American burger while showcasing them against an interior that is unabashedly Mexican.  His use of indigenous ingredients, distinct styles and regional iconic and celebratory dishes are showcased throughout his menu and I promise his burgers, sandwiches and salads will leave an impression.

Meadow Neighborhood Eatery + Bar

A little off the beaten path but worth the hunt.  The Meadow Neighborhood Eatery + Bar is a brand new restaurant owned and run by Husband and Wife team PJ and Lindsey Edwards. Featuring a relaxing atmosphere and focusing on seasonal south Texas food with a distinctive local flair.   The Meadow provides San Antonio with a relaxing place for family and friends to grab a table for 2 or 10 and enjoy an evening out.  Insider Tip: Don’t miss the fried chicken.

Location: 555 W Bitters Rd #110, San Antonio  (at The Alley on Bitters)

Mi Tierra Café y Panaderia

Eclectic murals, mischiveous pinatas, strings of lights, and authentic Tex-Mex food.  Put it all together and you don’t just have a restaurant, you have an experience.  The Mi Terra, a family-owned Mexican restaurant, opened 78 years ago and never closes.  It’s open 24 hours a day and the friendly staff are ready and eager to recommend their personal favourites.  While in San Antonio be sure to treat yourself to a traditional Tex-Mex meal at this unique establishment located in the historic Market Square.  Insider Tip:  Don’t skip the margarita.

The Paramour

The fastest way to feel like a rockstar, drinks at the Paramour.  Featuring a soaring rooftop bar, swanky decor, a champagne vending machine, and stunning city views it’s the perfect place to hang out before, after or instead of dinner!  Insider Tip:  Try and be there one evening for sunset, it’s all kinds of magical.

102 9th St #400, San Antonio

Cured Restaurant

Chef’s Steve McHugh’s new restaurant CURED has made it’s home in a beautifully renovated historical building inside the Pearl. The name of this smashing restaurant reflects so much more than the must try charcuterie boards.  The name “Cured” is intended to celebrate the owners successful battle against cancer, as well as the proudly displayed artisanal cured meats that are the centrepiece of the menu.  This upscale restaurant features a meat-centric restaurant and ingenious drinks.  Insider Tip:  If you’re looking for something different try the Cured Cocktail! It includes Lemon Thyme Moonshine, Ginger, In-House Citrus Bitters, Sparkling Wine.  Oh my.

306 Pearl Pkwy #101, San Antonio

Botika

Dramatic colours, laid back vibe, and a creative fusion menu.  Located in the Pearl, Executive chef Geronimo Lopez, has designed a visionary menu unlike any other I’ve ever experienced. Botika is a Peruvian, Chinese and Japanese fusion restaurant and is best experienced with friends so you can order all the dishes!  Insider Tip: To get the most bang for your buck; order multiple dishes for the table and share – family style.   If on offer that night, don’t miss the scallops!

Pharm Table

Pharm Table has now been open for almost 4 years and started with a vision, a dream of Chef Elizabeth; the dream was to heal people with food.  The restaurant runs on a unique philosophy, the goal, to have every meal on the menu geared towards keeping peoples bodies in balance.  The kitchen contains no gluten, processed sugar, or dairy products. and the dishes are exquisitely designed to stand on their own as flavorful vegetarian powerhouses.  Note:  They do have locally-raised chicken, beef, and pork available for addition to any dish.  The beautiful menu changes 3 times per year.

106 Auditorium Cir, San Antonio

La Panadería

Breakfast! La Panaderia specializes in making handmade bread and pan dulce inspired by Mexico’s Golden Era.  Perfect if you want to pop in for a quick coffee, even better if you’re looking to indulge in a brunch to feed your soul.  I now consider myself a wee bit of a French Toast expert and can firmly recommend the French Toast with berries and a side of crispy bacon.

301 E Houston St, San Antonio

Eight restaurants, all so different and yet each truly amazing, are but a drop in the bucket of the incredible foodie scene in San Antonio Texas.  From burgers to sushi, fine dining to fusion there’s something for every one and every palate.  Catch a flight, grab a friend, then grab a fork, San Antonio is waiting for you.
