How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

How To Survive The Winter…when you are really a Summer person

in Everyday on 03/19/18

Confession, I am feeling all kinds of sad for myself.

I’m tired of being cold.  Deep down to my toes kinda cold.  Why can’t the damn furnace keep up?

I can’t stop sneezing, so sleep seems to be out of the question.

I hate when you step outside and the wind steals your breath and freezes your eyelashes.  This is not a good look for me.

It’s March for crying out loud.  This cold needs to stop.  Now.

Thanks to a ridiculous amount of rain, frozen ground and a crap sub pump,  I’m all kinds of good friends with my wet/dry vac.  Good times.

Do I even need to mention the slush and snow?  Gah.

So what’s a girl to do to beat the Winter blues?  Here are a few tips to pretend you are a Winter person when you are a Summer girl at heart and the cold just won’t go away.

  1. Find Your Colour – Break out the bright colours.  I love my black but March is the time to pull out the pink, red or even yellow sweaters to help brighten your day and your mood.
  2. Get Out – Force yourself to get outside even if the outside hurts your face.  A quick walk to get the mail or around the block with the dog will make you feel a world better.
  3. Pop A Vitamin D –  During the Summer it’s easy to get enough of this important vitamin from the sunshine, not so much in the gloomy Winter –  Considering a Vitamin D supplement for you and the ones you love is a great idea.
  4. Enjoy The Indoors – Seriously, we aren’t all snow bunnies.  Make the most of that next snow day by cracking open a new puzzle, popping some popcorn and declaring a movie day.  Time with yourself or the ones you love is always a good idea.
  5. Take Up A New Hobby – Cooking classes, knitting, maybe a photography class to help you find the beauty in the day.
  6. Exercise –  That treadmill you have over there isn’t just to hang laundry on.
  7. Break out the Crockpot – Give yourself a break and whip up a fabulous hearty meal at the same time.

Hang in there baby, spring is coming.  I swear.  It has to.

I hate cold weather and from September to June I dream about summer and then it’s once summer finally gets here it’s gone too fast. I used to be able to get away during the winter every couple of years but now it’s too complicated for me so I suffer during our harsh winters.

You’ve got great advice here but the only thing that gets me through winter, is sarcastically telling myself that it has to end sometime.

I think I will have to embrace these tips next year – I am NOT and never ever have been a winter person. Summer ALL THE WAY for me… and it’s finally warm and bright again!!! Thanks for these ideas, I truly need help getting through the “dark months”… lol

Have been doing all my spring cleaning and hopefully it will be all done by the time the spring like weather comes.

I can’t wait for summer to come, I am so over and done with winter. We are still in negative temps here this week and the wind was so cold today! Next week is forecasting for double digits in the positives so I am looking forward to that.

I know I’m weird but I love winter – I hate being hot so I do my best to make the best of winter. Skating, watching curling, bright colours. All so much fun!

I do love the heat of summer. I say bring it on! However, getting outdoors when it is cold can be fun too although it does take a mental push for me.

Good tips! Also, hubby got a ‘light box’ which he says helps him avoid getting S.A.D. throughout the winter months.
