How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

7 Free Things To Do In Los Angeles

in Travel on 09/18/17

Currently, we’re tripping across Los Angeles taking in any many sites as time will allow.  The one problem with cramming in as much sight seeing as possible in a short time?   The cost of tours, “must-see sites” and museums can quickly add up.  One way to combat this problem is to take advantage of all the free or almost free things you can find.

Here are our choices for the best seven free things to do in Los Angeles:

The Hollywood Sign

Hike, bike, walk or take a sightseeing tour or bus to the famous Hollywood sign.  Do it for the gram!

Griffith Observatory and Griffith Park

Take in the views from the top of Griffith Park, the largest municipal park in the area and access to the building and grounds are complimentary.  A must see.

Rodeo Drive

Time to do some shopping, or more likely, unless you are Julia Roberts, do some window shopping on the famed Rodeo Drive.  It’s free if you want it to be!

Venice Beach

Take a stroll through the five blocks of canal-lined blocks giving this area the name the Venice Canals.  Charming arched pedestrian bridges and sweet beach houses are in complete contrast to the busy city of Los Angeles.

Hollywood Walk of Fame and TCL Chinese Theatre

“The forecourt of TCL Chinese Theatre has been one of the most popular free attractions since the 1920s, when actress Norma Talmadge accidentally stepped in wet cement during the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille’s King of Kings. Movie fans from around the world compare their hands and feet to those of stars past and present.”  It’s kitschy and you have to do it!

Los Angeles County Museum of Art

LACMA offers free access to the museum on the second Tuesday of every month.   Access to the Chris Burden’s Urban Light exhibition in front of the museum is free to access daily, as is the sculpture garden.  Currently one of the most instagrammed spots in LA.

The Original Farmers Market and The Grove

Located in West Hollywood is the Original Farmers Market. Said to be a sprawling historic market, it features a range of trendy shops, restaurants & gourmet grocery stores.  This area is also home to The Grove. Here, you’ll find some of your favorite shops, as well as a variety of places to eat, a movie theater and loads of special events.

Safe travels!

Rodeo Drive, the tarpits, and Venice are top of my LA sight-seeing list. Those, and a bus tour of the stars’ homes.
