How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

Taking Back My Sunday

in Family on 10/17/16

holmesfamilythanksgiving2016

Once again Monday has rolled around and I find myself startled by it.  How is it Monday already?  Where did the weekend go?  Friday night was the usual crazy.  Errands, groceries, take-out, we did manage to squeeze in a movie.  The weather was gorgeous on Saturday and we enjoyed every minute.  But Sunday?  Sunday was a total write off.  Again.  Sadness.  How did I let a perfectly good Sunday slip through my fingers?  I spent it doing a little laundry, cleaned the kitchen, watched some TV with the fam, remembered to take the garbage our for Monday morning, but not much else.  Pathetic.  So today, a resolution.  I must start making the most out of our Sunday’s.  The way we used to before kids, before life got so damn busy.  How?  Effort and planning required.

Here are 5 ways I’m going to do my best to make the most of every Sunday…no matter what life throws at me.

  1. Stop using Sunday as a “work day”.  This is not a day to be glued to the laptop or the phone.  It’s a day for family.  Work is banned today.
  2. Sunday has traditionally been a day where I must “get it ALL done”.  Instead of leaving all the laundry, cleaning, shopping for school lunches for Sunday afternoon, I will shuffle a couple of those tasks to Friday.  Freeing up all kinds of time and pressures felt on Sunday night.
  3. Carve out some time to get outside.  Maybe it’s just a walk with the dog, or reading a book on the deck, but some time outside is better than none.  Fresh air makes everything better.
  4. Have dinner plans organized.  Too many Sunday afternoons are spent running to the grocery store.  I may not be the best at meal planning but certainly I can have a plan for dinner one night a week.  One night where our little family of four can sit down like an old fashioned family and enjoy a home cooked meal.  Even better?  If we can invite extended family or friends to join us for this meal.
  5. Start a new tradition.  Perhaps it’s time to bring back game night.  When we rent a cottage each summer we have the best time playing a very competitive game of Sequence.  I’m not naive. I know board games won’t be met with applause and warm smiles every week, but family time should be welcomed.  A board game, a movie night, a trip out to grab ice cream or coffee together.  It’s just about creating some time out for family and being thankful for the smiles.

Too many days are lost making plans, or dreaming of what comes next.  Here’s to taking back our Sunday’s and finding the joy in the every day.

How do you make the most of your Sunday?

Sunday is a day I love to cook, a few batches for the week ahead.

We didn’t really restrict my son at all from whatever activities he wanted to do but I insisted that NOTHING be scheduled on Sundays. I need a day off too!

It’s so true, Sunday used to be known as a day of rest and all of the stores were closed. But everyone has such hectic lives and everyone is busy, so you have to make time to relax
