“Dinner’s Ready!” When I was growing up, dinner was always a family affair. We could count on my Mom to have a healthy meal ready and waiting for us by 6pm on the nose (before the news!) and the whole family was expected to sit and eat, catch up on our day, then help clean up afterwards. It’s one of those fuzzy family memories that I look back on with fondness. Now as a Mama of two I recognize the importance of that time together, I want my girls to value family dinners, to know the importance of a healthy balanced meal. It’s important to find that time to re-connect and of course enjoy a nice meal together. Unfortunately, family dinners are becoming less common. Statistics Canada has reported that Canadians are now 10% more likely to eat meals alone than they were in previous decades. I know life feels busier than ever, but I still believe every family should make a regular shared meal a priority. After all, family traditions need to be instilled when children are young.
We do our best to squeeze in those family dinners whenever we can. Sometimes this means eating at odd hours, before Dance classes, after Cheer practices, and when we do, we often offer up a fabulous fun dessert!
