How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

Stressing About A Minion

in Family on 10/19/13

Oh you read that right.  It’s 11:30 at night and what am I doing?  Searching in vain for a pair of “Minion Goggles” and a Yellow Toque which clearly does not exist!

Back story?  SweetGirl and her fab group of friends have a brilliant idea to be a group of sweet little yellow Minions for Halloween. Cute right?   She came to me over the top excited with her master plan, which even included a tutorial for  “How to make a minion costume”.  The girls have thought things out!  They are excited, enthusiastic and ready to work.  All I have to do is come up with a pair of overalls she can cut up, the aforementioned yellow hat and of course the goggles.  Easy Peasy.  Not.

MinonPlan

I have now spent about 12 hours in total looking for overalls.  We finally found a HUGE pair, cut those suckers down to size and duck taped up the hem,  That’s how I roll.  I found a yellow T-shirt to go underneath the giant ass overalls, and a pair of tights to complete the yellow hue.  This means my kid might actually look like a minion by Halloween.

Now on to my issue.  Where on earth can I find a yellow toque?  Clearly this colour is not “in” this year, as they don’t exist, and the goggles?  Don’t get me started.  I’ve been to every party store, hardware store, Goodwill and Dollaraama within the city limits.  I can’t find anything that will meet SweetGirls standards.  They are kind of the essence of the costume.

MinonToysRUs

(these are from the Toys R Us website and sure would save me a lot of work!)

Why am I stressing about a Minion?  Not because I’m having trouble re-creating one of the cutest cartoons ever created, but because every single Halloween it is the same thing.  Lofty dreams and goals are set for the perfect costume.  I try my hardest to help their little visions come alive and then…..Halloween Fail.  It seems to be our very own special Halloween tradition, and it sorta sucks.

Maybe I will get lucky and SweetGirl will stick to our other Halloween tradition.  The one where the night before Halloween, she changes her mind about what she wants to be and needs an entirely new costume.  Keep your fingers crossed for a ghost.  I’m great with an old sheet and a pair of scissors.

saw some pics on FB, ,friends kids were wearing Yellow Curly wigs? for head vs toque? Also Canadian Tire may have work goggles and just spray paint those suckers with silver spray paint form the Auto section?

Today we solved the goggle problem! WOO HOO! Found some cheap plastic glasses at a costume store with Sponge Bob type eyes. DD added plastic cups, duct tape and some manner of elastic to hold it all together. Very crafty of her. She’s happy, I’m happy. (and I do believe a hat is on the way, otherwise I’m going looking for a wig. Love that idea)

My kids are luckily wearing a costume that they already have. I, on the other hand, am considering joining the teaching staff at my school who want to dress up as minions as well. But looks like that is easier said than done. Oy!

lol This reminds me of me and my youngest daughter. She was the one of my girls who really loved Halloweeen.

One year, late in the game decision was to be a witch, which I thought wold be simple….but no

We went to every Zellers (at that time), Wal Mart, dollar store we could find but all of the witch hats had been sold.

I was so stressed about the damn witch hat that I don’t even remember what she dressed up as in the end lol

I had a great chuckle when reading your post this morning as it brought back ‘warm’ memories of our two darling daughters. Always, ALWAYS, the night before the big day, one of them would come to me in tears saying that they didn’t like their chosen costume and could mommy think of something else? Upon occasion, after finally running out of suggestions and ideas for these sweet children, who did I call….the neighbours!! Someone always was able to come up with something. Too, too funny! Thanks for the wonderful memories!! Good luck with your quest!

The touque – you could use any colour and just paint it yellow!
