How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

Is The Easter Bunny Dead?

in Everyday, Family on 03/29/13

My girls are at “that” age.  Actually, truth be told they are way past the “OH MY GOSH THE EASTER BUNNY IS COMING TOMORROW MORNING AND I’M SO EXCITED I CAN’T SLEEP MOMMY” stage.  After a frank conversation with my youngest it became painfully clear that the truth is, in our house, the Easter Bunny is officially dead.  Wah.

EasterPastEasterPast2

So as I sat at the kitchen table with my SweetGirl, so much older now, we had a little check in.  Are you okay?  Her response “Um, that you have been lying to us and that this Bunny thing that hops into our house and leaves us eggs doesn’t even exist??  Yeah, it’s okay Mom, I’ve known about this for a while.  Everyone knows.”  Slap. In. The. Face.  I know it is past time for my babe to have this “lie” figured out but Gee, I thought I was a damn good Easter Bunny.  There were nibbled carrots, nose prints on the glass, and candy hidden in every nook and cranny.  It was a production worthy of an Oscar.

So now that we are “out”, and the Bunny is no more. I have a problem.  A big one.  What do we do now?  What does one do after the death of the Easter Bunny?  Do you continue the traditional Easter Egg Hunt on Easter morning?  Do you skip that part?  Switch things up and just have a big old breakfast.  That’s super boring.  I tried to discuss this drama with SassyHubby, his response “I dunna know.” Thanks for coming out!  So sleep deprived and saddened I took matters into my own hands.  I grabbed my purse and sought inspiration at the mall.  What?  Isn’t this what every domestic goddess does?  I soon found myself side tracked at the mighty Wal-Mart.  As I wandered from aisle to aisle perusing the chocolaty Eastery goodness, the answer came to me.  When in doubt, drag it out!  We had to have at least one more hunt.  Just a little one, I swear.  A few bags of eggs.  A couple of bunnies.  Oh and maybe a couple of gifts, you know to make up for all that lying.  Not because this Easter Egg Hunt is really all about me.  Not at all.

This year I will layer in a couple of new traditions.  After way more discussion then my BlueEyed girl could EVER want to have about Easter, it has been decided that we will add Easter Baking to our new tradition. Easter Cupcakes and Hot Cross Buns are in the works.  There will be painting of Easter Eggs and Easter Nails! Yep, this year we will paint Easter Nails.

After our hunt will be the big brunch, and we will try and stretch out the magic of Easter Morning by reflecting on the real reason for the Holiday, and simply take some time to give thanks for our beautiful family and friends.

Change isn’t always easy, but we will try and make it fun.  Besides, thanks to SassySis there is a brand new generation of Sass to love and lie to.  Long live the Easter Bunny!

Um, I’m over 40 and we still have egg hunt at my mom’s. grand kids get candy but we hunt for money usually. All different denominations make things fun and a game to see who gets the big payout. Mom always said whatever it takes us to keep us coming home at Easter. I remember one year in university hunting for eggs filled with $1.25 each. It was exactly the cost of a load of laundry.

Growing up when we stopped believing but the hunt still happened. Except dad just hid money instead of eggs. LOL. I still have believers or at least pretending to believe believers. Not sure exactly if real or pretend. When they stop I’ll still try sneaking a hunt in. I mean what kid/teen wouldn’t want to hunt for money?

Having two sets of kids drug it out for me a little longer….this year? Cake pops shipped to the grands. That’s it…..with a prayer they would celebrate the resurrection!

Aww! Age can bring about so much change! At least you’ve created new traditions to still keep Easter a family-fun bonding time. 🙂

I continued to do baskets for many years after my children knew! It’s a fun tradition. I don’t do baskets anymore since they are 34 and almost 32 but I still find things to give them at Easter like a cake pop maker or something they can use in their homes.

The bunny does not die. He continues to show up and it’s my responsibility to eat all the chocolate that shows up. yep. I find too that being church goers is a huge part of making these holidays feel like actual holidays that aren’t just Bunny and Santa-fied.

I am over 30 years old and the Easter Bunny still comes at my moms house – we will be hunting for chocolate and beer… that right, beer is what keeps the older “kids” interested

Yey to new babies and grown up girls, it’s all a happy mix. We still hide the eggs but we never said there was a bunny, we just like hiding eggs lol.
