How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

UNICEF Survival Gifts: Gifts That Give Back

in Uncategorized on 12/23/14

Did you know nearly half of all deaths in children under 5 are attributable to malnutrition? Sobering.  Shocking. Heart achingly sad.  As a Mama of two, an Aunt of five, and one who loves, needs to have a house full of happy, healthy laughing children, when I hear a statistic like this, I want to know what I can do to help.  Thanks to UNICEF, Moms can now add “childhood survival” to their shopping list and it’s as easy as one simple click.  Here’s how you can still help this holiday season:

What is a Survival Gift? Survival Gifts are real, life-changing gifts that go to children in need.  When you go to https://shop.unicef.ca/ you are given the option to pick from one of more than 60 survival gifts that can help children in need from around the world.  It’s the chance to keep a child alive.  Help a child thrive. Give the Ultimate Gift!

Once you have chosen your survival gift you may then dedicate a card.  Receive a paper card or send a personalized card to your friend or loved one for the gift you made in their honour. Your gifts will help to save lives.

There are different options for Survival Gifts at various price points.

For example: By purchasing Plumpy’Nut® Product. This calorie-rich food helps to quickly bring malnourished children out of the danger zone.  Right now, you can purchase 42 packs of this life saving food for only $10.00.  The cost of two fancy coffees?  Plumpy Nut will boost a malnourished child’s chance of survival with this therapeutic, peanut-based food. Approximately three packets a day will help a malnourished child gain up to two pounds in one week, promoting health and well-being.   *If you purchase right now, you can have your gift matched and double your impact!  Purchase $50.00 of Plumpy’Nut® Product and reach 210 children!

UNI1

A gift that pairs well with Plumpy’Nut® Product? Therapeutic Milk.  For $20.00 you can provide fifty glasses of milk for children – a necessity at emergency feeding centres, refugee camps and hospitals.  I am now embarrassed that I had to dump out spoiled milk last week.

UNI2

In Africa, one in six child deaths is due to malaria. An insecticide-treated bed net is a simple, very effective way to save precious lives.  For only $9.00 you can buy one pack of bed nets and truly make a difference.

Child with an Olyset net.

$22.00 buys six cozy blankets.  Keeping the most vulnerable snug and warm.  This gift will wrap babies in comfort and security, protecting them from cold and illness.

UNI14

Still have to pick up something for Grandma?  An Aunt who likes to pay it forward, how about cousins who already have more than enough video games and chocolate?  These options and so many more are available for purchase at shop.unicef.ca.  I urge you to consider giving back this holiday season.

In this house we like to give a gift that makes a difference.  We will be making a purchase from our family to another ….just because.  The joy is in the giving.

Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday.
