How to Survive Life in the Suburbs

A Night Out With the Girls….It Ain’t What it Used to Be

in Uncategorized on 02/28/09

Woo Hoo
Friday Night and it’s time to head out with the girls. Somehow all of the stars have aligned. The kids are all tucked snug in their beds and 10..yes 10 of us are heading out on the town for dinner and drinks to celebrate a girlfriends 40th birthday.
(I feel the need to mention that I have a couple of years before it is my turn to celebrate the big 4 0.)
So..Step 1. Find the perfect outfit. We are going to that uber cool spot downtown where everyone goes. It’s casual and the outfit must match. Right? OK easy. Fave jeans, new little sexy pink tank top covered almost completely by a little ribbed black sweater. That little pink tank just sticks out the tiniest bit. Hair coiffed. Make-up done. Black boots on. Ready to go.
Step 2. Meet the girls in the back room and let the fun begin.

We had a great time. A nice dinner and a glass of wine. Lots of laughs, great catching up, the obligatory photos. There is nothing, I repeat..nothing…like good friends. Headed home at about 11:30pm completely satisfied with my evening out on the town.

Now for my reflections on the evening. I have realized I’m getting old!

*Back in the day you didn’t even head out to the bars until 10pm. Home before 2am….that must have been a lame night.
*Dinner and a glass of wine wine never used to be the marker of a good night. Found a party where the girls drank free..now that was a good score!
*A night with no men. What? No good! Now…Well, it was just about perfect.
*And this cannot be my imagination. The girls, or “women” well, they have changed too. I looked around at the 20 year old “women” that surrounded me. They were wearing enough make-up to hit a runway in New York, and barely enough clothes to lie on a beach in Mexico. Boobs were pushed up to a point, and bellies were showing everywhere. I am in no way a prude, but honestly…don’t you have to leave a little something to the imagination? When I was in University I absolutely had my bar shirts, and went out thinking I looked pretty good, but I was also smart enough to throw on a sweater or cute little jacket when it was -24 degrees C! I wonder how many “housewives” had these same kind of thoughts about me!

I guess while I was home changing diapers, doing laundry, planning birthday parties, and raising a family the years have passed me by a whole lot faster then I ever realized.
Time stops for no one. I’m afraid for the day when my baby girl gets dressed up to go to the bar. I’m not ready to go from the hip mama to the hot girls mama.
Someone stop the clock!

it doesn’t matter how different it is now compared to then, friends are the same and the love never changes.

      I love my girl’s nights.

You have me in tears! I am afraid I won’t be ready to send by girl off either. I was one of those crazy twenty year olds (who still wore a coat though) and have to look back and laugh at how silly it all seemed.

A night out over a glass of wine with no men….sounds perfect now a days!

Oh, Girl, I can so relate! but I am very jealous that you found an outfit with such ease! didn’t you go through the whole does this make me look frumpy? or does this make me look slutty? thing? You are my hero! I’m so exhausted by putting together the outfit that I never even want to go anymore!
