Welcome!

I'm often amazed and confused by the bizarre happenings behind the closed and competitive doors of the typical suburban home. The following is a place to share my thoughts and reflections on daily life as I try to navigate this crazy and wonderful world.

I Didn’t Want It To Happen…

I never wanted…

To mix up a teeny hand held air freshener with breath spray. Perhaps the picture of a pine tree should have been a clue?

To ever have to try to eat anything like this. Meal Worm Salsa? Shiver.

disgusting

To ever admit to my 12 year old daughter that her grade 7 math is getting too difficult for me.

To send a powerful volt of electricity through my bod as I stepped out of a hot tub to do something really important; turn on the CD player.

To walk through a grocery store with spit up on my shirt, and baby poop on my pants. Fashionable.

To watch my Hubby break his big toe falling down getting out of the shower. Uh, cause I kicked him out of the shower, not in the “showering together” mood.

To ever confuse eyeliner with lip liner again.

To have a police officer knock on my door with a need to check my pool, and under my pool cover for a missing man. Gulp.

So the scary thing…all but ONE of these things are true! Meh, it happens. Can you guess which one is a fib?

Today I Was A Bitch

My SweetGirl is just that. Good hearted, kind, loving and sweet through and through.  She is also lacking a little bit in motivation. (foreshadowing)

Well, SweetGirl came to me after school today with a complaint.  She had been given the opportunity to play a piano song in her class.  She sat, she played, she was proud.  For a moment.  She was quickly followed by three other girls in her class who played “longer and harder songs, one of them was really good Mom and one was just showing off”.

Instead of being the supportive nurturing Mama I usually am; I was a snappy short tempered bitch.  My reply.  “Well, maybe those girls practice more then the bare minimum required of them.  Maybe their mothers don’t have to nag them every single day to get their piano done.  How many times did you practice this week?  If you want to succeed and get better you have to work at it.”  WHAT THE !  Who was that woman?

SweetGirl did not know what hit her.  She had no idea that I had a headache from hell, that I had just picked cat poop off the floor, that the insurance company had screwed up again, that I had 14 things on the go, and about 6 hours of work to get done in the next two. In short, that poor kid was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

As tears started in her eyes, matching ones welled up in mine.  Mommy Fail.  I turned it around as best I could, told her if she worked hard she could do anything.  Had the ability to be an amazing piano player, IS in fact an amazing little piano player.  Hugged her. Apologized and still felt like a big ole jerk.

Sometimes it’s hard to be a Mama in the Suburbs.

Sorry baby.  I will do better.

140 Characters To Win A Nissan?

Have you ever wanted to try your hand at creating a commercial? Oh wait, how about winning a brand new car!!!! Seriously.

InnovationChallenge

I don’t think I have ever blogged about a contest before, but when this little notice flew into my mailbox I just had to share! Nissan has introduced their “Innovation Challenge”. How do you accept this challenge? Just tell the people of Nissan in 140 characters or less what innovation means to you! You know, is it style, design, safety features? How does driving your vehicle around town help you survive life in the suburbs? (hmmm must put some thought into this myself!)

Just sum your thoughts in 140 characters or less and enter! This gives you the chance to win a car or ……

1 of 7 TOSHIBA Tablets!

Here are the details:

Phase 1- Fans will be asked to create a post in 140 characters or less and post it on the contest page.

Phase 2- We will then select and ask those who created attention grabbing posts to then create a brief video that embodies their post. The videos will be reviewed and the top 5 will be flown to Toronto to pitch their ideas to a panel of judges.

Phase 3 - The finalists’ videos will be judged by the community and a panel of industry experts and a winner will be selected. That winner will receive a Nissan vehicle of their choice (not including the GT-R or NV) and have their idea brought to life in a Nissan commercial!

Confessions From The Suburbs

*A Monday Morning letter to get the guilt off my chest.

Dear Sir,

I am truly sorry if you heard me just now, but for some reason I found it incredibly funny when you walked head first into that lamp post at break neck speed.  No pun intended.  Just a suggestion, but I would think you benefit from looking up from your Blackberry a little more often.

Signed,

The Mama Laughing Uncontrollably From The Car

Dear BlueEyed Girl

Thank you for saving your Mother’s butt.  If you had not been here today, I never would have figured out how to turn the darn TV on.  Either I am getting that old, or Dear Hubby has one two many toys hooked up to this thing.  Thanks for saving movie night.

Love,

Mom (who is clearly going to be just like Grandma)

Oh boy, it’s going to be a long week!  Happy Monday!

Children’s AccuDial® –It's Revolutionary

It’s a cranky day in this house. We are ill!

It’s time like these that I am happy to have confidence and knowledge in my skills as a Mama, to know what to do to get us through the sick days. When to treat cold symptoms with love, add Kleenex, chicken noodle soup, medicate with over the counter drugs and when to call the Doctor. Sometimes you have to rely on your Mama’s instinct to get you through, sometimes you have to educate yourself and reach for the brands you trust.

This is why I’m glad to have been introduced to Children’s AccuDial®.

AccuDial2

I’m not a Doctor so won’t begin to tell you if one drug is better then another, but what I can tell you is that has a Children’s AccuDial® is a revolutionary system designed to ensure accurate dosing. This system is based on weight and not age.

AccuDial3

The weight of children in the same age group can vary greatly, and they should not always be given the same amount of medicine. The solution: There is a two part labelling system on each and every bottle that allows you to turn the outer label until your child’s weight is displayed in the window, right below, the proper dosage displayed in millimeters.

This process takes the guess work out of children’s over the counter medications. Brilliant.

Scary fact: According to the American Medical Association, 72% of children are dosed inaccurately with OTC medications.

Inaccurate dosing may happen because of the use of inconsistent measuring devices such as teaspoons, age-based dosing is extremely inaccurate in the mid to upper ranges, or ordinary over the counter labels that may lack adequate dosing instructions. All preventable! AccuDialCapture

Children’s AccuDial® is formulated to treat many different types of cough, cold and allergy symptoms and can be found at most major pharmacies.

Wishing your families a safe and healthy winter!

I Don’t Have Time For This

I was supposed to be at a Home and School Meeting last night.

Big plans to help host a crazy fun dance for my BlueEyed girls school tomorrow.  There will be a DJ, pizza, dancing.  Boys and girls in grade 6, 7 and 8 getting their party on.  I must be in tip top shape. You can’t take your eyes off those pre-teens for a second!  They are slippery little things!

I made the mistake of starting a bathroom renovation one week before I’m supposed to hosting a 70th Birthday Party for my Dad?  Looks like a tornado tore off just half of that 20 year old stomach turning wall paper, wish the “tornado” would come back and finish up! I am a dumbass.

Oh and someone had the nerve to tell me there is less the 38 days until Christmas?  Can this be right?  I haven’t even started shopping!

So many balls in the air, not enough hands.

NO Time to be SICK.  This Mama needs a Sister Wife….you know, just for a couple of weeks, and one that is not allowed anywhere near my Hubby.  So wait, I guess I need a maid or a personal assistant.  Oh, and one that works for free, yep that might help.  Sigh.

Sending you all healthy vibes and a fabulous weekend!

The Newest Form Of Birth Control

Movember Moustache

Oh yes, I know.  Movember Moustache is a great way to raise awareness about prostate cancer and in many cases to raise money for charity.  However, in my Hubby’s case this moustache growing thing; it’s simply the best way for him to challenge his buddies to a facial hair growing contest and I secretly think….to gross out his wife.  I hate his itchy, scratchy, SO unattractive, facial hair (that he keeps begging me to rub) and will be thrilled when December 1st rolls around!   I don’t have pics of the offending moustached Hubs gone wild, but anything that can take this man….

brad-pitt-before

to this….

brad_pitt-mustache

can’t be good!!

Seriously dudes what are you thinking???

So here is my question to you.  Do you think there will be a  dip in the number of births about 9 months from now?  I can’t be the only Mama who finds their man a little less attractive when he has his cave man on. Right?

Please say I’m right or Hubby might just keep this thing until spring!

Deck The Halls With SassyModernMom

I love Christmas.  It’s a wonderful time to play hostess at parties, make real time for your family, and of course deck the halls out in the most beautiful decorations of the year.  Christmas decorations! My problem, the decorating ideas in my head never turn out quite as envisioned?  Part of my issue.  Nails. I have nail hole anxiety.  It only takes one or two “little slips” to leave you with a wall full of nail holes and one red faced from laughing until his sides hurt Hubby.  Me, nails, Christmas decoration placement…yah. It has always equalled disaster.  Until now!!

The lovely people of 3M and Everythingmom.com sent me a huge array of Command Brand Decorative Hooks and a decorating challenge.  I am one of 15 bloggers who was challenged to use 3M Command products in a Holiday Decor Challenge!  Want to know what I did?

I took this plain old mantel from this:

The gallery with the most votes will also win a cash prize!

One Thing Not On My Bucket List

Hillbilly Handfishin.

p8729303_ce_r_aa

Seriously.

Have you heard of this show?? It’s on Animal Planet and also known as Noodling.  A show about throwing yourself into a muddy creek, wading upstream with yer buddies and sticking your body parts into random holes to use as “bait” until you catch yourself a giant ass catfish.

23274 EP 8. Deliverables.

Um, her hand is in there between that things teeth!! Shiver.

I can honestly say that Noodling is not something on my bucket list.  Good grief.  Is this on your bucket list?

Nose Hair Plucking and Bright Blue Eye Liner. Where Do We Learn That Stuff?

I was lamely trying to take my 40 year old face and cover it with enough make-up to pass for a 36 year old. Yes, at this point looking 36 would make me all kinds of happy.

Dear Hubby had just spent his 2 minutes and 42 seconds brushing gel through his hair, checked for any exceptionally long nose hairs, and his beauty routine was complete.  Now he really wanted to know.  Where on earth did I learn how to do all of these things that us women folk need to know in order to “present ourselves to the world”.

So I thought about it and with my genius IQ and I came up with this eloquent answer.  “I dunno know.”

Then it bugged me, so I thought about it some more.  Where did I learn that women need to wash their faces every night before bed, that they must moisturise, the steps required for foundation (still can’t do that right) blush, eye shadow, mascara, eyeliner, lipstick, eyelash curler, hair straighter…the list goes on and on and it’s exhausting!

I guess my Mom taught me some things.  Never to leave the house without my “face”.  Love my Mom, and as much as I didn’t want to pass this one on to my dear daughters, I fear I have.  I will not leave the house without at least lip gloss and eye liner.  I am not that hot, but I am that vain.

But the rest of it, the make-up application, the face washing, the constant need to moisturize and fight wrinkles; where did all of that come from?  You know what is scary, I think I learned most of my beauty regime, my standards for what it means to be a “proper”  girl, what makes me pretty, came from my girlfriends, my peers.  I clearly remember in grade 8 my girlfriend with the cool older sister went from friend to friend “doing our make-up the right way”.  Bright blue eyeliner for all of us….and a lot of it.  We all wore our eyes the same way for the next three years.  That’s the power of the girlfriends!

Now that I’m older, magazines and the television keep shouting at me that I am getting old.  They scream you are 40 you need to fight wrinkles, age spots and any sign that you ever had a good laugh!!  So I do.

So how am I going to help my dear daughters be confident in who they are, just the way they are?  How do I ensure they make their own decisions about what is pretty, and avoid major fashion and make-up disasters along the way.

Here is my plan.  I vow to make sure they never get a poodle perm, encourage a make-up lesson at a professional make-up counter (at an appropriate age) and I will not try and make them into a mini-me.  I will encourage my girls to surround themselves with positive people.  To be themselves, and be proud of who they are!  I will be sure to tell them every day that they are gorgeous just the way they are.  No wrinkle cream, flashy dye jobs, perms or bad make-up required.  Know what else I’m going to do, I’m going to try and remember this myself.

Being a girl is hard…

SkyLanders Spyro’s Adventure

As the Mama to two pre-teens I’m always on the look out for new fabulous ways for us to spend time together.  When I was introduced to the brand new SkyLanders Spyro’s Adventure I knew I had struck gold!  A new kind of gaming experience that would be fun for the entire family.SKYLANDERS_LOGO_FINAL

I was sent a Wii Starter Pack which included the game, rated suitable for everyone, three Skylander Figures, a Portal of Power, Character Poster, Trading Cards and a Sticker sheet.  Everything you could ever need for an afternoon of family fun.  We synced our “portal” to our Wii, set out our brand new figures, readied the remotes and were anxious to begin.    Two portals are shown below.tn SpyroFigure

SkyLanders is a story driven adventure which allows children and adults to bring toys to life in a magical world.

EXPLORENEWWORLDS

My youngest selected Spyro to start with. Stuck him on the portal and we all sat in amazement as he was '”transported” into the Skylanders world.  How cool.  I was immediately struck by the incredible graphics!  Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure offers over 30 characters to collect and play with.  Each figure has their own unique personality, powers and abilities which provide distinct advantages, and skill sets for various levels, obstacles and enemies.  Picking the correct figure for the level or obstacle is key if you wish to be successful in your game.  That and it’s just darn fun to switch them in and out of the portal!

It was explained to me that each of these figures are actually “Toys with Brains” meaning each figure has the ability to “remember” the player’s experiences and stats.  It knows what levels you have achieved and what you have collected along the way! This also means the characters or figures can travel seamlessly from my house to a friend's or from one platform to another.  It can go travel to my BFF house and be used on their Will, Nintendo 3DS, Xbox360 or PlayStation 3 Computer system.  How cool is that?

The story is easy to follow and in my opinion quite suitable for a young family.  (there is some blowing up of things, but no guts or gore and as a Mama I appreciate this!)

As the story unfolds players encounter a variety of vivid environments, each with its own unique look and feel, and each providing different challenges, puzzles, and the discovery of secret areas, rewards and mini-games.

There is also an opportunity for Co-Operative Play.  Players can join forces with friends and play together or select their favourite characters to tag-team against certain obstacles, hazards and/or enemies within the different levels of the game.

Perhaps my favourite mode.  The Player vs. Player It’s a classic battle between players, and who among us doesn’t like a little friendly competition! (my secret plan…to practice until I am really good, build myself a huge set of battle skills and then challenge Hubby to a battle, he won’t know what hit him! Insert evil laugh.)

Want more information about Skylanders?  Think it might be a perfect Christmas gift?  Find them on twitter @SkylandersGame or look them up on facebook.

Available everywhere!

Disclosure: I was sent a Wii Skylanders System for the purpose of review.  The opinions expressed in this post are my own.

He Speaks My Language

Babe, What ever happened to that show with the drunk Dad, all those kids, and they are trying to keep from getting split up and going to foster care?

“You mean Shamless honey.”

Where is this high school?  I need to take SweetGirl there for volleyball.  How can I find it if this stupid map doesn’t make any sense?

“Honey, just go towards your Doctors office.  Then make a left past the first Starbucks before the driveway of the bakery that sells the great pies you love”

I don’t know which screwdriver is the Robertson!

“It’s the one with the little square hon.”

Honey, my jaw hurts right here.  It’s stiff, I think I slept funny . That’s all it is right?

“Yes babe.  It’s just the start of another headache, it is not a toothache. You will not have to go to the Dentist. Just breathe.”

Every single day I am thankful that I married a man who speaks my language.

Passive Aggressive Letters…with love

Yes it is that time again.  Time get some things off my chest and bring back the Passive Aggressive Letters…with love.

Dear Dude Parked in the Bus Zone,

Seriously?  Who do you think you are?  Are you so important that you think you can hold up an entire bus load of children while you “dash” into the school to get your one child.  Rude.  Oh, and when the bus driver honks at you and asks you to move your car.  The correct response is not to give him the “1 minute” sign.  It’s to MOVE YOUR CAR!  Sigh.  Some people.

Signed,

Will People Ever Stop Surprising Me?

Dear Tim Horton’s Customer,

At the Tim Horton’s coffee shop, there is a certain protocol one must follow.  It is quite simple really.  When you walk in the door, you go and get in line.  You line up at the BACK of the line.   You do not wave your skinny Lululemon clad ass and think this is somehow a pass to the front.  I for one am unimpressed. Okay I was a little bit impressed, but not enough to let you get your coffee before me and the 70 year old gent who held the door open for me.

Signed,

Yep, People Can Still Surprise Me

Dempster’s Lunchbox Inspirations

Mini Lunches for my Mini Me’s

I’ve been honoured to be part of the Dempster’s Lunchbox Inspiration program. A place we can all go to when we hit that wall. You know the one, the “sandwiches for lunch again Mom?” wall. It’s a hard one to avoid!

I’ve been making lunches for my dear daughters for about 8 years now and think I have learned a few things along the way. Here is my best tip:

Try and keep it interesting. Every once in a while, I throw in an unexpected treat when they aren’t looking, or a little note written on a post-it, fancy paper or even their napkin, just to let them know I’m thinking about them.

This week I decided to try a new surprise. I took a smaller approach to lunch. Literally! I bought mini cucumbers, mini cup-cakes, little cheeses and created some mini sandwiches held together with tooth picks. For some reason, big kids love all things small!

IMG_6671 IMG_6678

My mini me’s adored their little lunch. I already have requests for mini crackers and baby sized bread sticks. I’ll be adding this one to my list of favourite lunch time recipes.

Need some fresh lunchtime ideas to get you through the school year? Check out Dempster’s lunch box recipes here! Sometimes you just need a little inspiration to help get you out of that lunch time rut.

Thanks Dempster’s for inspiring me to get more creative with my children’s lunches!

Is This Too Much?

IMG_6716

My Hubby went away for “work” and all he bought me was a Reese’s Peanut Butter cup.  Oh wait, it weighed A POUND.

Did I mention there were TWO of them in that package?

He did good:)  IMG_6691
