Welcome!

I'm often amazed and confused by the bizarre happenings behind the closed and competitive doors of the typical suburban home. The following is a place to share my thoughts and reflections on daily life as I try to navigate this crazy and wonderful world.

Final Confessions of 2010

It has been an adventurous, perhaps even hilarious year.  Just when I think I have finally hit a Mommy rut, life throws me a curve ball that keeps me on my toes. From hiring a plumber to fix my kitchen sink…but that idiot choose to knock some fabulous holes in my walls instead, to bringing new meaning to the words “heating it up in the bedroom”, to flashing the lawn boy, my blonde moments may have reached an all time high.  Funny thing is, I learned from each experience and wouldn’t change a thing.  Errr okay, perhaps I would not have flashed that poor lawnboy!

It’s New Years Eve.  Time to make resolutions about the upcoming year, set goals, dream the big dreams.  So where do I see this Suburban Mom’s adventures going in the next twelve months?  How will I survive, enjoy life to the fullest with the maximum amount of enjoyment and the least amount of embarrassment?

I will not embarrass myself by setting a stupid goal to lose weight.  It is not going to happen.  I will instead try and embrace who I am, enjoy all that life has to offer in moderation while perhaps doing a little more TV watching from the treadmill vs the couch.

Meanwhile there is so much to look forward to and be thankful for!

My babies will turn 10 and 12 this year!  I will try and be the cool Mom, the one they can come to, the one the can count on. I will try and remember that BlueEyes is EXACTLY like me in every way.  She is mini-me with brown hair, and I will try and cut that little A-type kid some slack.

I will continue to be amazed and thankful for the people I have met through blogs and on twitter.  When I started venting in cyberspace I really had no idea what an incredible experience this would be.  Oh and PS…watch out San Diego….ModernMom is hitting the road and going to BlogHer’11 ! Woo Hoo!

I am so excited about other travel plans for the upcoming year!  Hubby and I are trying to decide what to do for my, gulp, 40th Birthday.  Nothing definite yet, but the planning and dreaming part has got to be almost as great as the vacationing!  Imagine a vlog from Paris?

As for not embarrassing myself…well, you know what? I think that may be just who I am. The upside..it does make for some fabulous blog material.

I vow to continue to confess my deepest darkest most embarrassing moments and inner most thoughts.  From the revelation that I may be My Hubby’s Hooker, to admitting that there are days I pretty much do NOTHING, to confessing how I and why I supported my girlfriend buying her double D’s.  (yes they do feel real) As long as I keep telling you what is going on behind my closed doors, you can all be reassured what is going on in your life is totally normal!

Love you all,

Happy New Year

Turkey Hangover

 IMG_5375

There are too many people in this house!

Getting ready for Christmas makes me feel like this!

I’ve eaten turkey for 4 days in a row.  It’s official, that is too much turkey.

I’ve consumed too much chocolate. Wait.  Not possible.

I hugged our family close, and know I am blessed to have them near.

We did Cocktails with Christmas gifts, cause that’s how we roll.  Rejoiced over Tassimo’s, jewellery, purses and sweaters that didn’t fit.  Ahhh, now the joy of exchanging ill fitting clothes at the jam packed mall shall be experienced.

We laughed till we cried, and ate until we felt sick.  Seriously.

I don’t know if my stretchy pants will make it till New Years.  I am once again thankful for Lulu Lemon’s stomach sucking butt lifting magic!

Six more gluttonous days, then the Christmas Holiday is over and I have to stop eating chocolate and croissant for breakfast. Or at least stop bragging that’s what I had for breakfast.

Hope Santa found you all and you are enjoying your Christmas break as much as I am!  See you soon.

Gravol & the Children’s Wish Foundation

GravolChildrensWish

Christmas is almost upon us and it is time to spend some coveted time with our families.  This time of year I always reflect back on the year we have had, and continue to marvel that despite the odd bump, we are incredibly blessed.

Two organizations that are working to make the lives of children and families better are Gravol and The Children’s Wish Foundation.

Last year, Children's Wish granted over 900 individual wishes to children with a life threatening illness. Thanks to the foundation and its generous sponsors like the maker of Gravol, the magic of a wish provides children and their families with an opportunity to share the joy of a special experience, and an escape from the day-to-day challenges of illness.

To take this partnership a step further, Church & Dwight Canada and Children’s Wish have teamed up to create an online resource from trusted experts featuring tips and solutions for parents.

Gravol is a proud sponsor of the Children’s Wish Foundation and has teamed up with them to launch this remarkable on-line parenting resource.  For the second year in a row, these two organizations have collaborated and are striving to provide parents a safe and trusted place where they can go to seek answers to their tricky parenting questions.  As a Mother of two girls I know how difficult it is to find information you can trust. Gravol and Children’s Wish have created this special online space where parents can find trusted expert advice at the touch of a key!

The site covers topics from Pregnancy, to Toddlerhood, Medications, including tips on how to give Medicines, Safety in the Home, and Travel Tips.  There is truly something here for every parent.  I hope you will take a look!

The holidays can be a busy and stressful time!  I wish you and your families, peace, love and good health.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Her List vs His List. Men are Simple.

Hubby and I were chatting late late into the night last evening.  We were counting ourselves among the lucky without too many wants for Christmas…ummm I mean besides the obvious complete home makeover and exotic tropical vacation for two.  In all seriousness.  The kids are alright.

So what do you get for the couple who already have all they desire?  Hubby thinks a “coupon book” is a good idea.  I can play this game!  My book would have coupons for a sleep in and breakfast in bed, one free vacuum with no bitching, a date night in front of the fire planned by him, a love letter written on PAPER and a back rub with no strings.  Done.

Now it’s his turn.  This my friends is where the wheels fall off.  In a mans world the coupon book looks something like this…. “Sex” “Sex” “Sex in this room” “Sex in that room” “You in my T-shirt” uhhh other things around sex that I am just not going to embarrass myself with by putting in print.  Huh?  Apparently 40 year old men really don’t need pretty ribbons and bows, thoughtful gestures and hugs, they just need to get it on?  For a man…nothing says Merry Christmas like sex.  Sigh.

Guess this is what is going on in the Suburbs.

FYI  Hubby is not getting a coupon book.

I’m going to Wal-Mart.

Happy Holidays!

Kenneth Cole Helps Me Shop For My Man

If you have a man in your life like I do, he is one impossible dude to shop for.  He can walk through every sporting or hobby store and simply repeat “Got it, Bought it, Have it, Got it.” Over and over again.  Hmmm Spoiled much?  This makes for a sorta stressful shopping trip for me!  What do you get for the guy who has everything…including oh about 15 watches.  No joke.  Fifteen.

You get him this little beauty.

KC3927One of the new Kenneth Cole New York, fashion forward, touch screen watches!  Sigh.  These brand new styles have been said to reference the classic 80’s style LCD watches and are available in a choice of either black or stainless steel.

KC3911Love!

On Christmas morning my Hubby is going to be thrilled to unwrap his beautiful watch.  Besides being blown away by the digi touch technology, the fact that it includes electro luminescent backlight, that he will be able to tell time in 32 cities, the stainless steel construction and the fact that it is water resistant, perfect!  I also have to admit I love the wristband!  It is heavy and beautiful.  I wonder if Santa will bring me one. I’ve been pretty good this year?

GiveAway! Rubik’s Slide & Tribond Game!

Last minute holiday gift ideas!

Did you ever have one of those Rubik’s® Cubes? I did. I spent hours trying to master that little mind bender. I considered myself the Queen of Two Sides, but never once got all of those sides completed perfectly. My Uncle, he could whip through that thing in under a minute! Oh, and my little sister, she will try and tell you she did it once. She didn't. She took off the stickers and re-arranged them! That is called cheating dear sister.

Rubik's%20Slide[1]In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Rubik’s® Cube, good grief I just dated myself, the third generation of an electronic version of this puzzle – the Rubik’s Slide™ has been released and is now available at major retail outlets across Canada! I smell a re-match! The Queen of Two Sides vs Sticker Re-arranger. Don't worry little Sis, the Rubik’s Slide™ has multiple levels of play and features over 10, 000 puzzles that require a combination of both speed and strategy. Ummm sticker re-arranging is not a strategy, but I think if we don’t invite Super Smarty Uncle to the throw down, it should all even out. tribondAnother great Christmas gift, and fun idea for a family or hostess gift is TriBond! Are you familiar with the classic version of this game? The New TriBond is a great board game that can be played with family or friends. The board game is described this way: Solve riddles, score tokens and race to beat your opponents as they ask one simple question “What do these 3 have in common?”. What I love about Tribond is that unlike many other board games, you do not need to have a great knowledge of trivia! Whew, because I am no Cliff Clavin. You simply have to link together three words by figuring our there common bond.

rubik

Both products are represented by RP Toys. RP Toys is a privately held company that has been actively involved in the Canadian toy industry for 20 years as both a distributor and a manufacturer of quality toys. It is due to their generosity that I am able to offer this great gaming package!

One lucky Canadian reader will win both the Rubik’s Slide™ and the New Tribond Board Game!

Pre-Christmas Rant. It’s A Tradition.

The holidays are just around the corner, the pressure is building and something has got to give…or I could just whine and rant right here.  Free therapy begins now.

Mother nature is freaking out and so am I. What is going on? My parents are in Naples Florida and are experiencing freezing temperatures?  Huh?  Up here, we have snow banks that are literally 6 feet tall and we have been told to brace for round too!  Enough.

Flyer delivery boy. Honey.  The flyer needs to be placed on our doorstep.  Wanna know why?  Because when you leave it on the driveway and then it gets covered in three feet of snow, this happens.  Look very closely. Can you see the flyer?

IMG_5319 IMG_5321

Yep. She is stuck in there.  This type of snow plow jam leads to red veins popping out of my Hubbys neck and my dear daughters hearing words I would really rather they not!  Besides, chasing down the bits that did make it through the throwy part of the snow blower, NOT fun.  IMG_5324Speaking of snow..Snow plow dude.  I fear for your life.  Not because your job is dangerous, but because if you keep ploughing in people’s driveways, there will be a revolt.  One of these Suburban Daddy’s is going to chase you down and stick a banana in your tail pipe…..or errr something way more sinister and icky.

Dear Neighbour.  Thanks for the Christmas card.  I’m happy to receive it especially since we talk like twice a year and hear the news that you will be in Florida for the next three weeks.  Ummm adding the “PS Can you please shovel my driveway when I’m away?” Shocking!  Not gonna happen sweetie!

People are rude.  Yes I know this is not news. However, do you not find that near the holidays people become exceptionally self centered and jerkish?  Today Mr. Entitled snaked the parking spot I was waiting for, and then when he saw me walking huffing by 3 minutes later gave me a “How YOU doin.”  Seriously!  Give your head a shake.  How Rude.  and might I add not a chance!

Teachers. I love you.  No one works harder then you. Except my 9 year old kid that you keep piling assignments on. Enough already!  Can we please have some slack for just a wee bit.  No one likes assignments over the Christmas Holidays. That is so very Grinch like.

Dear Turkey.  Yes, I am writing to/ranting about the turkey.  I buy you already stuffed and ready to go.  This is because I am a modern mom, not a domestic diva.  Please this year, could you thaw out overnight as promised and cook in a reasonable amount of time?  I would so love to feed my family before 8pm this year.  Thanks ol bird.

Ahhh Much better now. Ranting is good for the soul! Go ahead….try it!

Tween vs Proactiv & 5 Giveaways!

Yes..I have to admit it. I have a tween. You know the sometimes adorable, sometimes heartbreaking and oh so frustrating age that is no longer child, not yet teenager. Sigh. I have one of those in my house. This little tween means the whole world to me, so when she suddenly started having trouble with pimples I wanted to help. No Mama wants to see their baby struggle with self esteem, and let’s face it, you don’t feel your best with a big honking zit on the tip of your nose.

We went to the drug store, picked up and tried about four different face washes and topical treatments. Ug. Drying, abrasive, too much for this young one’s skin which is still so baby soft. Besides that, nothing really worked. proThen entered Mom Central with the opportunity to try the New Proactiv 3 Step System. I’ve seen this product line on TV countless times. Katy Perry uses it! Could this be the magic fix we are looking for? Something to help as my babe makes the transition from child to Teen? Also something to help me with the occasional surprise pimple. Not my kind of surprise thank you very much. Worth a try. We accepted the offer from Mom Central, and together are taking the 30 Day Challenge.

For 30 days we are going to use Proactiv’s three step system. It is designed to gently cleanse and exfoliate as it targets the blemish causing bacteria trapped in pores.

The super simple steps as described by Proactiv!

Step 1: Renewing Cleanser: A unique oil-free formula, with exclusive micro-crystal pharmaceutical-grade benzoyl peroxide, that contains smooth, tiny beads to gently exfoliate dead skin cells and other impurities.
Step 2: Revitalising Toner: A refreshing, alcohol-free toner with glycolic acid that helps balance skin tone and remove dead skin cells to reveal the vital, radiant skin beneath. Its special formulation to balance skin's natural acids includes witch hazel to refine and purify pores and aloe and chamomile to soothe and soften.
Step 3: Repairing Treatment: A light, oil-free lotion containing exclusive microcrystal pharmaceutical-grade benzoyl peroxide. The Repairing Treatment penetrates deep into the pore to help heal blemishes and help prevent future breakouts. The advanced delivery system is safe for the entire face and any other blemish-prone areas.

Our system arrived, I paired it with some cute wash clothes and we are all set. Mom and Daughter are going to try this system together. Bond over skin care. Love.

Another bonus, I get to share the love and offer five readers a full size Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer! Value $33.00 Canadian.

Woo Hoo! Here is how to enter!

Hating the Quick To Fall Asleepers

Yes, you read that right.  It is not even a real word, but it is how I feel.  I do not like you instant fall asleepers.  You know who you are, you know who I mean.  The people who put their heads down on the pillow and are instantly asleep! This may be just a teeny bit directed at my Hubby.  So, who exactly do you think you are, and how the hell do you do this???

How do you stop the whirling thoughts of the day from swirling around in your head?

Do you not have a single ache or pain that keeps you awake for even a moment?

Don’t you ever remember that you forgot to start the dishwasher and have to get up and start it?

Don’t you ever worry that you forgot to lock the back door and have to run down and check it?

Am I really the only one who forgets to put the laundry in the dryer?  Can’t leave that in there over night.  Super stinky.

Did the girls pack their stuff for cheerleading?  Is your first appointment tomorrow at 9AM or 9:30?  It makes a difference.  Are we almost out of dog food?  What are you going to make for sides at Christmas dinner this year?  Oh my gosh there are so many Christmas gifts left to buy!!  What on earth am I going to wear to the Christmas party on Saturday night.  Will it ever stop snowing?

IMG_5296 IMG_5266

Sigh.  Yep. I hate you instant fall asleepers.

Pass the wine.  Maybe that will help.

Psst.  One more thing keeping me awake! I don’t think you entered my giveaway yet!  It ends at 5pm today! Winner announced tomorrow.  2 prizes. One for your pet worth $150.00  Come see!

Milking Santa For All He’s Worth

santaclaus

*Warning.  Santa spoiler ahead. Not for little people.

Christmas is in 19 days!

My girls are 11 and 9.

Do they still believe in the fat man who drops down the filthy chimney bringing presents to the good girls and boys while leaving lumps of coal to all the evil folks?

Hmmm At least one of them does.  The other is smart enough to keep her mouth shut, make her list and clean her room without being asked.  If you don’t believe, he can’t bring gifts, right?

These are the facts.

I’ve been lying to my kids about Jolly Ole Saint Nick for almost 12 years.  Me. The Mama who HATES liars.  Who values truth and honesty.  I’ve been not only lying, but force feeding the fairy tale of the magic man and loving every second of it.  Why do I do this?  Two reasons:

One.  Santa equals power.  The girls are “disagreeing” .  All that is needed is a gentle reminder that Santa is watching and said disagreement is over.  They don’t want to clean up their toys?  Oh well, guess Santa can’t bring any new ones.  Ta Da!  Toy room is clean!  No nagging!  Not only that these children help with laundry, offer to shovel the driveway, empty the dishwasher, carry each others book bags?  Huh?    Random acts of kindness are rampant around here.  Santa throws big bad weight in this house.

The second reason I am crushing on the big man.  Thanks to Santa I get to see my babies eyes light up when they are sure those are reindeer prints in the front yard.  Witness sheer delight when they are positive the scratch at the window was an elf running away before we saw him.  I am able to capture a beautiful moment forever on my camera as they run down the stairs on Christmas morn to see if their stockings have been stuffed with all of those junky things Mom usually says no to.

It’s true, I have struggled with lying to my kids about Santa, but what I have come to realize is when the time comes much sooner then I want it to I will simply explain to my two beautiful girls, Santa is part of the spirit of the season.  The fun, mysterious, giggling, magical part.  I am thankful for the Big Man and the special moments he has helped me create.  So for now, I’m milking him for all he is worth.

Thanks Santa.

Christmas is coming up on us in about 25 days? Eekk! Oh I am so not ready. Are you in the spirit yet? Well, you would be if this happened in the food court at your mall.

This struck me as all kinds of wonderful. Yep, sappy tearing up and all. Hope the spirit of the season finds all of you.

*A note of thanks to Tales from Clippy Mat for spreading the joy of this fun flash mob. It happened in her local food court! So glad she posted it on her blog so I could share it on mine!

Trying to spread a little Christmas Cheer of my own I’m hosting this fabulous giveaway. $50.00 worth of Jewellery from Jewel Kade! Don’t miss out, a great gift for yourself or someone you love! US Only. Ends Friday so please enter today.
