Welcome!

I'm often amazed and confused by the bizarre happenings behind the closed and competitive doors of the typical suburban home. The following is a place to share my thoughts and reflections on daily life as I try to navigate this crazy and wonderful world.

Sometimes It's The Scary Moments. . .

blogher-logo-small

mabel_logo

The fabulous people over at Mabel’s Labels have offered up an unbelievable contest! Mabel’s Labels BlogHer ‘10 Contest. The winner is awarded a trip to BlogHer 2010 and a chance to work with Mabel’s Labels for an entire year. Can you imagine? How do you enter? Answer this thinker.

Electrical storms are going to wipe out the Internet (perhaps forever). You have one day left to write about your passions: what do you want to say to the blogosphere in 300 words or less?

Feb 10, 2010. A day that could have changed my life forever. A day I have not even been brave enough to write about…until now.

For more then 6 days I had been experiencing THE headache of all headaches. Throw in bouts of dizziness, issues with word retrieval, falling down, and I was scared. Rush to the Doctor. Something big and bad is going on. Doc admits, we need to look for a brain tumour.

Time for an emergency CT. Hubby by my side, we head to the ER.

This pain, this event, the look in my Docs eyes, it shook me to my very core. My life didn't pass before my eyes, but thoughts of my children, my Husband alone, did bring tears to my cheeks. Found myself a quiet place, knelt down and sent up a prayer.

Ping ping…CT test underway.

Pace pace…wait for the results.

The best possible news. I had gotten myself into a cycle of migraine pain that my body could not snap out of on its own. A few hours in the ER, a couple of IV’s and I could go home. CT scan. Normal.

Through this terrifying experience I have been blessed! I have discovered my true passion. It’s not the big things. It’s not just family, friends, food, blogging or travel.

It is recognizing the miracle of the little moments of every single day.

It’s in the giggle of my girls.

It’s the smell of my Hubby, discovered lingering on a sweater long after he’s gone to work.

It’s the unexpected coffee with a girlfriend.

It’s that last bite of brownie.

It’s every comment of love from bloggy friends.

It’s the feeling of sun on my face.

My passion, it’s all the little things, and I am grateful for every single one.

Get Financially Naked – Give Away

How to Talk Money with your honey

by Manisha Thakor and Sharon Kedar

Money. It’s not my thing. Don’t get me wrong, I like knowing it’s in the bank, I rely on it for my serious addiction to bags, vacations and all things shoe. It is just not something I spend a lot of time considering. Certainly not something I’m passionate about. Odd really since my father was a big shot in the Toronto banking scene.

Then I received this book. Get Financially Naked. How To Talk Money with your honey. Now, I’m thinking perhaps my dollars and cents deserve a little more respect!

This easy to read financial guide gets a girl thinking and conversation flowing.

Some points I loved!
~Are you financially compatible with your mate? (Is this given enough serious consideration before the big I Do’s? How about now?)

~Did you know that 70% of us are living 1 payday away from financial chaos?

~Forget size, What really matters Is financial compatibility.

~Do you know how much it costs the average family to raise a child? (hint the more you make the more you are likely to spend and it ain’t cheap!)

There are some fantastic talking points and work sheets that the authors carefully walk you through to help you on the way to living your financial dream. What ever that may be!

Want to win a copy of your very own? Great! Here’s how!

Mandatory Entry.

1. Follow me publicly or tell me you already do.

I’ll Take What She’s Having

I watch my 8 year old SweetGirl don her suit, and throw on her cap and goggles. I can see the butterflies beginning to stir within. It’s a brand new session of synchronized swimming and she is here at the local pool, braving it. Sans BFF.

This group of young girls is a wonderfully eclectic mix.

These burgeoning young women are all jittery. A combination of nerves and excitement. Anxious to make new friends and master this new sport. What I find remarkable is that not one of this group of 9 is sucking in their stomachs, covering their bodies with towels, looking at their reflections in the mirrors with shaking heads or disapproving eyes.

They are confident in their little Speedo suits.

They are beautiful.

I am proud.

So what is that magic age?

At what point do confident little girls become creatures obsessed with how they look. At what point do self assured little girls turn into body obsessed creatures of worry?

How do I bottle this current confidence and swagger, this lightness of heart, and keep that potion for when she needs it during those terrifying teen years…….and beyond!

For now I am thankful for her confidence, for her smile, but wow, a potion like that, available when needed? What a gift that would be.

This Weeks Confessions From The Suburbs

Dear Romantic Hubby bought me a Chocolate covered candy apple as part of my Valentines Gift.  I promised I would share.  Apparently I lied.  Chocolately covered goodness is all gone.  Went out and replaced it with a second new Delicious Apple.  Shhh.  No one will ever know.

Did my new drivers license arrive in the mail yet?  Well yes, but I keep telling him “No”.  The picture is that horrible and I am that vain!  How did I start looking so much like my mother in just under 5 years?  Not there’s anything wrong with that, she is a stunning 65 year old gal!  Must invest some uber expensive face cream to combat the crows feet and check out that Jillian’s Shred.  Think if I went for some botox the Ministry of Transportation would give me a re-take?

Was secretly relieved when the sleep over / tubing birthday my SweetGirl was invited to was in direct conflict with BlueEyes Gymnastics meet.  She legitimately can’t go and now I don’t have to make up an excuse as to why she can’t sleep over at that bossy know it all full of attitude I can do everything better then you can do it little girls house.

Was so tired that I put lip liner where eyeliner is supposed to go.  Just one eye before I figured my mistake.  Red rouge..not the best look around green eyes.

Sitting cross legged on the floor while writing this post.  Had a HUGE sneeze…and a little bit of pee sneaked out.  Good grief.

Can you beat that confession?

Lazy Sunday Meme~The 5-5-5 Tag

Michelle over at Flying Giggles and Lollipops caught me in a game of tag!

I am to answer the five questions with five answers and tag 5 more bloggers. Be sure to pay a visit to Michelle and check out all her great posts, she is a sweetie!
Question 1: Where were you five years ago?
1.) Running around with a 6 and a 3 year old.  Embracing the crazy.
2.) You could often find me with a hard hat on, a matching wee hard hat for the three year old.  We were in the throws of our very own Restaurant Makeover.

booth tables

We flipped a Burger King into a upscale dining restaurant.  So much fun, so much work.
3.) Since it’s February I was also probably preparing for our annual trip to Florida. Oh how I love me some sun!
4.) Trying to decide if I could truly handle this stay at home mom gig.
5.) Making a decision.  Are two children enough for me?  Still deciding!

Question 2: What is (was) on your to-do list today?
1.) Ummm, laundry.  Sexy eh?
2.) Figure out what on earth I’m going to wear to that 40th Birthday party tomorrow night.
3.) Who’s kidding who, buy something new for that party tomorrow night.
4.) Carpool home from Cheerleading.  Second carpool to Gymnastics.  I’m a glorified chauffeur.
5.) Try not to eat all those crumbly oatmeal cookies in the kitchen.  Remember?  The party tomorrow night?

Question 3: What five snacks do you enjoy?
1.) Dur.  Cookies..oh especially hot out of the oven.  Yum.
2.) Popcorn.   I have a problem.
3.) Warm toasty bread and tapenade shared with my hubby.
4.)  Raw Almonds (I know, boring)
5.)  Any kind of muffin.  That is what goes best with the oh so addictive Chi Tea Lates from Starbucks.

Question 4: What five places have you lived?
1.) On a beautiful lake in the Muskoka’s.  The colors, the rocks.  Sigh.  This is where I spent weekends and summers when I was growing up.

PA050747[1] PA060757[1]

2.) In a house with shag carpets and olive green appliances.  I am a child of the seventies and eighties.
3.) A University dorm room.  Too small and not enough bathrooms.  All kinds of fun.

4.)  My first Apartment.  A tri-plex where we rarely locked the doors and went back and forth between the neighbours like some kind of bad sitcom.
5.)  My current home.  Full of myself, my hubby, 2 girls a dog and cat.  A house full of much laughter love.

Question 5: What five things would you do if you were a billionaire?
1.) Travel!  There is so much of the world to see.  Apparently my 8 year old wants too see “A Mime in A Box in Paris”  Huh?  Funny kid.

2.) Build our dream home and pay off mortgages of those near and dear.
3.) Create Summer Camps for children and teens with special needs.   There are just not enough quality services for these incredible people.
4.)  Buy that vacation home somewhere warm and sunny! Have you heard, I hate the snow.
5.) Did I mention travel?  I see a year of homeschooling and traveling.  Five star all the way baby.

And now 5 more bloggers...

You know I always feel such guilt trying to pick just 5 people to pass these things along to!  If you want to play, please do, in the meantime I will ask these new reads if they want to play!

I Shush My Kids

shh-Saved my favourite show of all time, The Amazing Race, on the good ole PVR to share with my little brood. That little brood would NOT shut up!

I shushed them.

Calmly explained…no talkie during Mama’s favourite show.

Attempting a phone conversation with bff. Little girls screaming in the background.

I shushed them.

Not cool little ones. We all know you don’t bug Mama when she is chatting with Aunt Julie long distance. Aunt Julie has the BEST gossip. Not that I ever gossip cause that would be evil.

Stealing a quiet moment with my Hubby, girls don’t seem to care. They were all interrupty and in our faces!

I shushed them.

Do they not realize how lucky they are that they have parents that still want ummm quiet time together?

Party of four little girls downstairs sounds like a mosh pit.

I shushed them.

Having severe case of play date regret. No escape.

I Shushed so much today I need some lip balm but hey, at least I didn’t tell them to SHUT UP!!! I didn’t even think about telling those little creatures to shutty and go to their rooms and leave me alone cause my head hurt and I needed QUIET. Sigh. Bad Mama.

Apparently to survive life in the suburbs, shushing is required.

Oh, and note to self, baking the kids some double chocolate cupcakes following the aforementioned shushing, relieves much of the Mama guilt.

Valentines Day is Not for Sissy’s

chocolate I for one adore Valentine’s Day.

An excuse to sleep in. If I get really lucky, if he wants to get lucky, breakfast in bed.

The joy I get from buying my babies some chocolate and silly stuffed chihuahua puppies.

Countertops covered in home made chocolate cup cakes, pink icing of course.

Little gifts of flowers and candy from Romantic Hubby.

A reminder to slow down and take some time for those you hold dearest.

The problem with Valentine’s Day, what about those St.Valentine forgot this year?

Granny likes my phone call, but misses her husband, gone more then 14 years now.

The holiday shines a bright pink spotlight on my girlfriend struggling with a new separation.

A friend, who is struggling with her health, doesn’t really feel much like embracing the spirit of Cupid this year.

To all of my dear friends not feeling the pink this year.

I wish you chocolate, and warm fuzzy feelings the whole year through…not just on this Hallmark Holiday.

Keep Your Kids Safe! Safety Tats GiveAway's

SafetyTats

Did you know that according to the research done by SafetyTat 90% of families will experience losing a child in a public place?

That is an experience not soon forgotten by either caregiver or child.

One fabulous new idea. SafetyTats! An ultra-durable, uber cool, waterless skin applique. It goes on without water and does not wash off.

Put it on your Child’s arm. Add your details with the included pen. Breathe a little bit easier.

As a woman who gave up a career working with children with special needs and their families I have to tell you, I think these SafetyTats are brilliant!!

Imagine having a child who could not tell you their parents phone number. A toddler or even a pre-schooler or older child who when under stress has trouble remembering Mom’s cell number.

As a mother of 2 girls ages 8 and 11 who travels fairly often, I see how comforting these would be for both Mother and child.

I love the idea that when we go to Disney World this winter, my girls can select their own style of SafetyTat!

My tween wants me to order this one!

SafetyTat2

(the color is actually closer to white and clear!)

I can put it on their arm, add my phone number with the pen which is included, and then breathe a little easier knowing if they get separated from me I can be easily contacted.

Did I mention one SafetyTat will last for up to two weeks. Guess I better take a two week vacay!

-also fab for field trips, allergy alerts, big birthday parties, summer camps. The list is really endless!

This is one of the best new ideas I have seen in a long time. Love them.

Now to the Giveaway's!

There will be two winners!

Each winner will get their choice of one sample pack of the Quick Stick Write-On! Your choice of Boy, Girl, or the Multi design pack.

On top of this there is also a special discount of 10% for readers of How To Survive Life In The Suburbs for any orders of $15.00 or more.

Simply go to http://www.safetytat.com/ and use the following code.

HTSLifeInTheSuburbs

Must be typed as seen, case sensitive. This code is valid now through February 22, 2010

Here is how to enter our Give Away!

Mandatory Entry.

Go to http://www.safetytat.com/ Take a look at all those cool Tats and then come back her and tell me which Quick stick write-on you think your kids would like.

Resolutions After The Bowl

You know how there are New Years Resolutions? Yeah, well, I am no good at those.
I'm never going to eat better, exercise more or worry less.
I love my junk, my Bow Flex is an awesome Laundry hanger and I am pretty sure worrying is part of my DNA.
My conclusion, New Years Eve Resolutions suck. No one can keep them, they just end up making you feel like a great big fat lazy failure.
Boo.

This morning, the sun came up and I had an epiphany!
I am giving up on New Years Resolutions and embracing Super Bowl Resolutions!

Things I will do differently next year:
#1) I declare that from now on I will find a cute guy on both teams to cheer for. This way no matter who wins, ModernMom is happy.
#2) I will never again try to explain to my children that the Super Bowl is just as exciting to Daddy as High School Musical 3 was to them. They don't get it. I shall find something else for them to do.
#3) I will add veggies into next years SuperBowl menu. Too many carbs. Too much glorious junk left us all feeling bloated and guilty. A couple of celery sticks would have gone a long way.
#4) I resolve that I will never again feed my dear Hubby Eggs, Nachos and Chili at the same Super Bowl Party. That combination along with his team winning left me with one content man. You know what this means? A man who is capable of farting in this sleep. *shiver

Our little SuperBowl Party was fab this year.
I repected his game, he cued me when the commercials were coming on.
With my new Super Bowl Resolutions I know next year, it will be even better.

Fashion Before Function

Yes, I can admit it. This is something I have always said. It’s kinda of a mantra.

Going out on the town? There is two feet of snow. (Yeah Canada!) I don’t concern my stuff with all that white stuff. I do not do the sensible thing, I grab my cute little black pickle stabbers. They go better with my jeans, help elongate the legs, and are all matchy matchy with the new “had to have it” top.

boots

It’s minus what? Oh well. Must not worry about it. This wee white coat is to die for and I feel great in it. Fashion Before Function I always say.

Then we come to today's dilemma. SweetGirl is going to a slumber party tonight.

Mama. I can NOT be seen taking a Disney Princess Sleeping Bag. That is so not cool!

Disney

Hmm. Yep. I remember the peer pressure thing a little bit too clearly. I guess it is time to go and trade in this “baby” sleeping bag for something a little bit more grown up.

Drop the babes off at school and head to Canadian Tire. What? You have not heard of Canadian Tire? K. It’s only the bestest giantist hardware, camping, fishing, car needs, light bulb, paint, plant store around. It’s Canadian eh.

They have like 88 different styles of sleeping bags to choose from? Oh nooooo. I am clearly out of my depth. The sales guys there, they think this is all kinds of funny.

Look, the kid just needs something to crash in when the sugar wears off. There will be no rain, no hiking to the arctic, no ground to sleep on. No grounding sheet required, no air mattress underneath, no three room tent to accompany my purchase. This is not real camping, this is little girl camping. With candy, lip gloss and giggling. I need a sleeping bag that goes with that!

Thank goodness for the fashion before function rule! I don’t need sales dudes to help me out of my shopping dilemma, I just have to follow the rule! When in doubt…go for fashion baby!

I selected the three and half pound burnt orange, down filled sleeping bag designed by Roots. She is pretty and puffy and cozy.

sleepingbag

One happy Mama, one happy kid.

Here’s hoping she sleeps like a baby tonight.

Oh..and don’t forget to put your fashion needs out in front and enter my Vintage Pearl Giveaway!

A Savvy Girl Always Checks Twice

Facebook is evil. Or maybe that should read, men are scoundrels.

You have all heard me whine.

Hubby is away.

He texted me late last night.

Guess what?

He misses me too, and he wanted to tell me all about it.

We flirted back and forth for a looonnnggg time. It was kinda fun!

He cajoled.

He teased.

He pushed.

I relented.

Yes, I sent him a picture. ONE.

Positioned myself for optimal beauty.

Click.

Send.

(photo borrowed from flickr, not my cellphone!)

“Uploading to facebook”

Ahhhh? What? Noooooooo!!!

Panic. Panic. Panic.

Heart racing.

Dash downstairs to the computer, as I swallow the bile that is quickly rising in my throat. I log into facebook. Is it there?

No not yet. Is it still coming? Maybe. What the hell am I supposed to do?

Deactivate the whole damn account. Yes.

Good bye my fickle facebook friends. You need not see my lingerie clad décolletage today.

Breathing starts to return to normal.

Hands still trembling.

Hubby texts once more. He wants me to re-send.

Ha! Are you bleepin kidding! Not a chance mister!

What did I learn?

I am just not that adventurous, and if I am going to pretend to be, I had better check twice before I press send!

Hope you still love me!
