Welcome!

I'm often amazed and confused by the bizarre happenings behind the closed and competitive doors of the typical suburban home. The following is a place to share my thoughts and reflections on daily life as I try to navigate this crazy and wonderful world.

Bras and Tears

Bra Shopping has been a solo endeavor for me for more than the last 20 years .

Pawing through little bits of lace and sateen looking for the perfect piece of miracle wear that would convert my tiny cleavage into an asset to be proud of.

I have always expected great things from the bras I brought home. I have needed these frilly little numbers to do everything from hide budding cleavage from boys, to push and pad (clearly looking to attract the boys by this point). Later I needed working bras to nurse with, and now just something comfortable and still a little sexy...please!! Although I have had high expectations from my lingerie, I really can't say I have dwelled, fretted or concerned myself when it was time to make a new purchase. Until now.

Why worry now? Why is it different?

Well things have changed.

Now I am helping my daughter pick out her very first bra. (I have decided to rebel against the words training bra...what a yuck name, what are we "training" them to do anyway?)

As we head into the cool little department store with the cutie pre-teen girls clothes I can see my BlueEyed Girl eyeing up the frilly camisoles, sports bras and wee little bras. Being the uber cool Mom that I am I jump on the moment to ever so nonchalantly suggest we grab a couple to take back into the change room with us.
She eagerly agrees.
We select a few while my 7 year old daughter dances and twirls to the music behind us.

Off to the change room.

Shocking. My 10 year old daughter wants my help trying them on.

I gamely help her do up the clasp on her first pick. Biting the inside of my cheek so the tears threatening to fill my eyes will stall. My baby, in a bra. Sigh.

10 minutes later and we are checking out...3 baby bras in a bag and one pre-teen holding my hand.

Bra shopping is not what it used to be.

Oh, I'm sooo not ready to bra shop. I have a hard enough time finding a good one for me. Plus, that's just too much!

I wish I could tell this wasn't going to get both better, and worse.......

You told this so wonderfully, that the visual of your baby in her first bra brought tears to MY eyes......

Awww... :)

Quite a while before I get to take my 2-year old to shop for her zee-bra (as she calls it now!)

I had almost the same shopping trip a few months ago. It's so hard to watch them grow up. I am so too young for this!

And just so 'thatgirlblogs' doesn't feel too bad, my lilttle sister who is not hardly 13, hers are so bigger than mine. I totally feel your pain.

We're going bra shopping tomorrow for my Middle Daughter. She's grown out of all of her bras and needs more. I have to chuckle a bit.
My Oldest Daughter and I love Victoria's Secret bras and well everything else they sell.
I love bra shopping and I'm sure that my 7 year old will be dancing along to the music that will be playing!

Hugs!!

LOL, so glad mine didnt want me to go in there with them. I do occasionally when they go on sale, buy them both some.

They're both like me in that department, not much there. LOL. so yeah I can empathize with them.

Gee, getting a jock strap is a piece o'cake compared to this. I knew there was a reason I had two sons...

I still have to help me dd bra shop and she is 16! It is a daunting task when you are young and even though she has been doing it for years, she likes my moral support :) I am happy about that.

Oh crikey - I had totally forgotten that this stage would happen. Thankfully I'm still a few years off...although this post has filled me with panic - I can't imagine my little girls in bras. The thought terrifies me. Having said that, if they take after me then they probably won't need a bra until they're at least 20. *sad sigh*! x

My youngest will only wear sports bras. The eldest - oh boy. When I got her a cute one that was just ever so slightly padded, I overheard her telling her friend, "My mom is finally letting me wear a stuffed bra". I told her there was a difference between padding and stuffing. She shrugged and shot me a "whatever". Teen girls are so fun.

I think it's sweet that she trusted you and feels close enough to you to have you help her. But, it's so bittersweet to see them grow up.

I took LW's daughter this summer to get some. It was weird at first because she obviously isn't my daughter, but in the end we had fun. It's so hard to see her growing up!

Oh my - I am going through the same thing with my 11 year old and 13 year old.. It is tough to watch them grow into women - where did my babies go? Got the call - when my eldest was a camp last year- "Mom, I started my period"... sigh...
Love,
Kelly

Oh man, and I was just thinking how sad it is going to be when my baby girl goes to kindergarten...in two years!!! I'd better start sucking it up now.

Awww, you are really struggling with this whole growing up thing, which I COMPLETELY understand! Such a bittersweet time, but SO good that she feels so close to you!

OMG! I've got all that to come - little miss bras for my daughter.

I think that is so lovely, you shopping with your girl getting her underwear. My mother never did that - had to buy my own!

Aw it sounds like you made a special memory for your daughter's first bra! I don't even remember getting my frist bra. Well, I didn't really even NEED on until I was about 22. ;)

You did it! It seems they grow up right before our eyes and yet how tender that she leaves, holding your hand. Cherish that!
