Welcome!

I'm often amazed and confused by the bizarre happenings behind the closed and competitive doors of the typical suburban home. The following is a place to share my thoughts and reflections on daily life as I try to navigate this crazy and wonderful world.

I've been Mam'ed

What does it mean when some 25 year old check out girl says..."There you go Mam" as she hands you your change?
It means you have been Mam'ed!
SHE is at LEAST 25 I just turned 38...seriously..just. Should she really be:
"Yes Mam"
"Here you Go Mam"
"Thank you Mam".
QUIT MAMING ME!
Sigh.
Perhaps it's manners? Or maybe it's Karma baby.
I apologize to every single 30 something women out there who I thought I was being polite too.
I deeply regret my horrible language.
I'm sorry I "Mam'ed" you.

(Oh and Thank you to the car load of inappropriate 19 year olds who cat called and whistled at me today. You were probably drunk, but you did take a little of the sting out of my previously mentioned old lady moment!)

As if you were mam'ed! Silly young people, trying to be all polite! 38 is way too young to be saying mam'ed, you know! And yay for the cat call. Whatever, it's nice to hear sometimes!

LOL! Down here in the "south" kids are raised to address all adults as "sir" and "ma'am" . Doesn't matter if you are 19 or 85, you are "ma'am" to anyone younger than you! Coming from New England myself, this was a shocker, but now it's habit for me as well. I am also called ma'am by those much older than me. Just a southern thing i guess!

I do believe that it is meant to be kind and not because of your age. I guess they should just say a very nice "Thank You" and leave it at that. A few years ago my 28 year old daughter and I worked together at a Hallmark store. I know that me, being in my 50's, would just say thank you but I know that she would say, thank you mam or thank you sir. She never meant it to mean your old. I think I need to ask her if she is still doing that.

Too funny. Whenever I get Mam'ed, I always remember this line that I heard a comedian say years ago: Mam is just another word for B*tch.
I hate it. I DO.

Really, and I get this a lot more these days than I would like to. :)
Not that it was meant that way to YOU....just to me...and everyone else. ;0
Take care, Suz

Ha ha - yes how annoying! You don't really get Maam over here (thankfully)...but I have been Ma'amed over in the States and it makes me laugh...

By the way - I actually thought about you at 2.30 this morning!!! I looked at my clock and giggled because I knew I had a few hours left to sleep!! Seriously!

Haha!

I was getting "Ma'am"ed at 18, every time I went on the military base. I barely even notice anymore. It's better than being called "miss".

My kids say Yes Ma'am when I ask them to go do something. Haha! I think they picked it up from Treasure Planet.

It's a slow and agonizing death when you start getting Ma'med! I know because I'm right there as well.

Now what's with the carload of 19 year olds!? Cat calls! I remember when I thought they were "annoying and immature"; now it would MAKE my day! LMAO!

Maybe she's from the south. I hear they are raised to call every woman ma'am.
What do I know...I'm from NY. You don't want to know what we call women. Be happy with ma'am!

Being ma'am was great when I was trying to get an under age drink. Think of the positives.

Oh shit...I hate it too. What am I saying. Just trying to be a friend.

I'm 39...hope that helps. :)

I hate being called Mrs ....., I think thay are talking to my mother-in-law. It gives me the "mam'd" feeling. YUK! let's hear it for the wolf whistlers - I used to get annoyed: now I'm grateful!

I have yet to be called anything along these lines. But then I avoid young people at all costs. They make me feel wrinkled and aged.

Hey, I'm 31 and I get Mam'ed!! What the heck?? Then the flipplin' babysitter actually used the phrase "people YOUR age" when talking about hairstyles or some nonsense. I'm seriously reconsidering her hourly rate.

I'm (gulp) 50 and I still hate being Mam'ed. Maybe... JUST MAYBE when I'm 70.

I was blog surfing and your post caught my eye. I ABSOLUTELY HATE being Mam'ed! I'm 35 and I think it's been happening since I turned 30. Makes me cringe every time.

What does it mean when everybody who calls you ma'am is old enough to be your mother? I'm 25 and get ma'amed more often than any human being deserves, but it's always by folks older than my parents! What's up with that? I usually just think, "Dude, you're older than my mom. I should be the one calling you ma'am." Argh.
